Good start for Denis Shapovalov

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov won his first-round match of the tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia on Wednesday.

For the occasion, “Shapo”, second seed in the competition and 12e world player, defeated Serbian Viktor Troicki, 197e in the ATP standings, in two sets of 6-2 and 6-3. The meeting lasted 63 minutes.

Shapovalov was originally scheduled to face American Sam Querrey, but the latter withdrew due to a positive coronavirus test and was replaced by Troicki.

“Shapo” completed the game with 10 aces and committed only one double fault. The Canadian also gave himself four chances to break his rival’s serve, which he managed to do every time. He offered no opportunity to break his serve to Troicki.

In the next round, Shapovalov will cross swords with Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, ranked 141e.
