Is the Ford Explorer ST a good choice?

I own a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse. Since my wife and I have three children, a three-row mid-size SUV is a must. I am looking for a sportier vehicle to replace it. I’m thinking of buying a 2020 Ford Explorer ST. What do you think?

Good morning Marc,

We understand that you are attracted to the ST version of the Explorer. Indeed, the line of the new generation model is rather successful and the style of the ST version is charming. However, in terms of driving, we were disappointed. Yes, it’s powerful and the acceleration is straightforward – with a 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine that develops 415 horsepower and 400 lb-ft, the opposite would have been surprising – but there the sporty aspect of the vehicle ends.

As with the Mustang GT, we found that the programming of the ten-speed automatic transmission was not adequate. Not only was she hesitant, but the jerks were numerous. What’s more, the management is completely disconnected! In short, it is far from being as dynamic in terms of driving as what the manufacturer claims.

However, we direct your search to the Dodge Durango. While the design of the vehicle is starting to date, and access to the third row may be less easy than in the case of the Explorer, but it is much more fun to drive.

You should know that the Explorer ST starts at $ 59,099. For comparison, Dodge offers its Durango in an R / T version starting at $ 50,697. Its 5.7L HEMI V6 engine generates 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. An even more radical version, bearing the SRT designation, is available starting at $ 63,297. In this case, we’re entitled to the 6.4L Hemi V8 that produces 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft.
