The Quebecer committed no less than 58 unforced errors and was only able to break his opponent twice on 13 occasions.
Very effective in return serve as evidenced by his 44 winning returns, Nishioka, 52e racket world, meanwhile took advantage of six of his 13 breakage balls.
It was a second duel between the two men in the ATP tournaments. Nishioka also ended the “FAA” run in Cincinnati last year.
Auger-Aliassime (22e) had reached the round of 16 at the US Open recently, eventually losing to Austria’s Dominic Thiem.
Nishioka will now face Frenchman Hugo Gaston (239th) in the second round. The latter defeated his compatriot Maxime Janvier (204e) in three innings of 7-6 (5), 6-4 and 6-3.
