Some thirty Quebec musicians will pay tribute to the big names in jazz over the coming weeks. They will bring back to life the music of Billie Holiday, Wallace Roney, David Sanborn, Maurice Ravel, Weather Report, and others.
This series of nine concerts entitled Tribute to the greats of jazz will be webcast from November 28, 2020 to February 27, 2021.
An initiative put in place following the cancellation of the second edition of Quebec Jazz in June, which was to be presented last summer.
These concerts will be filmed in the concert hall of the Arquemuse music school and at the bar Le D’Auteuil, in Quebec.
“We experienced a huge disappointment when we had to cancel our second edition due to the pandemic. This situation led us to think about what we could do in order to offer a quality programming segment, ”said Simon Couillard, general manager of Quebec Jazz in June, during an interview.
The second edition contained some tributes and it was decided to go in that direction.
“We spoke with musicians from Quebec to see if they had any project ideas in mind. The idea snowballed, ”he said.
Tribute to the greats of jazz will launch on November 28 with saxophonist Janis Steprans, who will present a tribute to the music of Lee Konitz, who died at the age of 92 of complications from COVID-19.
Gabrielle Shonk and her trio will bring back to life the music of singer Billie Holiday on December 4.
On December 11, bassist Carl Mayotte and his band will attack the pieces of the legendary American band Weather Report.
Olivier Madore-Millette and his band will be featured on December 12 in a concert that will pay tribute to trumpeter Wallace Roney, Miles Davis’ protégé, who died last April.
The cost is $ 15 for a concert. It is possible to purchase a package of $ 110 for the nine shows. Tickets and packages are on sale on the platform lepointdevente.com. Information is online at jazzenjuin.ca.
