Sackboy waited patiently for the arrival of the PlayStation 5 to make its return to our game consoles after six years. New technology, new skills, new universes … In short, many things have changed in the absence of the hero of the saga LittleBigPlanet. The newspaper took stock of this Sackboy: A New Adventure with its Creative Director, Ned Waterhouse.
First the presentations.
You don’t know Sackboy? This hero, all sewn wool, had his first adventures in the popular series LittleBigPlanet from 2008 to 2014. He finally returns with a great new adventure, launched on the PS4 and PS5 consoles earlier this week.
This time around, the stakes are higher for the resident of Patchwork Monde. Because Sackboy must save his peers from the clutches of Vex, the villain of service forcing them to build his brand new Machiavellian invention.
But our hero is ready. And he has more than one (new) trick up his sleeve.
Indeed, Sackboy now has a vast arsenal of movements and skills, which he now deploys, and for the first time, in 3D.
“Sackboy can run, he can roll, jump, dive, pick up stuff, throw it, slap it… but he can also do all these new movements, one after the other. The game mechanics are more nuanced, they allow the player to continue to discover new ways of playing over the levels ”, explains Ned Waterhouse in videoconference with The newspaper.
Certainly, this new three-dimensional world – rather than the 2.5D of yesteryear – has a lot to do with it. But the team of Sackboy: A Big Adventure has also taken advantage of the new DualSense gamepad to enhance the experience in several ways. The first of them: a range of different sensations, adjusted to each texture of this animated universe.
” As LittleBigPlanet, Sackboy: A Big Adventure has this handmade aesthetic, with different materials. With its adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, the DualSense controller becomes an extension of the character, giving the player a more complete tactile experience. Whether the surfaces are made of felt, glass, metal or grass, the feeling is different every time Sackboy walks on them or drags an object. In short, it allows a whole new level of immersion, ”says Ned Waterhouse.
Those who discover this new game on PS4 will be able to enjoy the almost full experience. Everything will be virtually identical, except for those tactile niceties and, obviously, superior graphics unique to the new generation of console.
In multiplayer mode
Another new feature to note: special attention has been paid to multiplayer mode. You can roam this new universe solo, of course, but you can also venture there with up to three play partners, whether they are in the same room or scattered online.
Some levels, around ten, are also only accessible for groups of two or more players, to encourage group experiences.
“The game plays perfectly well solo. But we tried to make it even more exciting when players indulge in it with friends. This manifests itself with a new range of functions and mechanics aimed at encouraging teamwork, for example, the sharing of lives; players have to work together and help each other, because if one player loses a life, they all lose one, “says Ned Waterhouse.
A new function, the helicopter, will also allow novices to benefit from the more in-depth expertise of certain teammates. When activated, it will give the chance for players having more difficulty to follow, by air, their more experienced peers so that the whole group finishes the level safe and sound.

Perfection (or almost)!
PlayStation was risking big with Sackboy: A Big Adventure, overturning the codes firmly established by the very popular series LittleBigPlanet. Well, successful bet. The cutest hero arrives today in a new universe (parallel, of course) refreshing, irresistible and all in all practically perfect.
Let’s immediately get one thing straight: yes, fans of LittleBigPlanet will find themselves on familiar ground with Sackboy: A Big Adventure. They have absolutely nothing to fear. But this time around, the original essence is distilled and then infused into an all-new platformer game that soars far beyond its peers.
All of this new offering – reserved exclusively for the PlayStation, by the way – charms. Its vivid and colorful worlds, cute without being childish, its instinctive and fluid control mechanics, its particularly sought-after musical coating and, of course, the frankly endearing Sackboy, further enhanced thanks to the integration of 3D.
As a bonus, this new adventure allows the player to discover all the new avenues, now within their reach thanks to the DualSense gamepad. Every texture, every roughness of the universe deployed on the screen, is transmitted in a tactile way to the player, as are the tensions and friction caused by the various actions of Sackboy.
We would be remiss if we were to ignore the (almost) endless costume options available to us to customize our Sackboy. Piercings, frog, tiger, lion clothes, extravagant hats, gloves, hair of all kinds … We found ourselves spending many, many minutes submitting our hero to fitting sessions.
Does this affect in any way the game mechanics or the performance of Sackboy? Not at all. But it’s incredibly adorable … and addicting. Like the whole game, then.
