In order to properly prepare you and your vehicle for the arrival of another winter, here are a few practical tips:
This witness who enlightens us
Under-inflated tires have a pernicious effect, even in winter. In the cold season, they cause a vehicle to glide, compromise its stability, increase braking distances and wear out more quickly. Luckily on modern vehicles, there are pressure sensors (TPMS) which keep watch. What about those who do not? Unfortunately, the motorist will have to check the tire pressure himself. However, it is not recommended to carry out this check at very low temperature (below – 10 ° C). Under these conditions, the humidity in the air can indeed freeze the valve by infiltrating it, and you risk, in a short time, end up with a flat tire.
Embellish your wheels
Many conscientious motorists already equip their vehicles with steel rims to better cope with the rigors of our climate, and that is very good. What is less is that many of them fail to cover them with wheel covers. Their importance is not so much aesthetics as their ability to protect the bolts from bad weather, if only to facilitate their loosening in the event of a puncture. In addition, their presence makes it possible to reduce the formation of ice in the wheels, a phenomenon which, by distorting the balance, sometimes compromises the road behavior of the vehicle.
“Turn up the heat”
An interior that is too cold impairs concentration. Worse yet, if one suffers from a cold, bladder problems or back pain, the symptoms will worsen if one sits on a frozen seat. Long live the heated tubs! That said, however, you must be careful not to opt for the other extreme and overheat the cabin, so as not to expose yourself to drowsiness. Moderation tastes better here too.
Winter or not, motorists will choose to use it. Another little tip: keep the gas tank at least half full, otherwise condensation can form in the tank, which could freeze the lines. As for additives, they are still recommended especially when the vehicle is regularly in a heated garage or in an underground parking lot.
Beautiful, but not too long
In winter, the pleasure of seeing the body of his car shining under the rays of the sun is short-lived, because the slush and the abrasives will hasten to spoil the party after a few kilometers. On the other hand, it is important to wash your vehicle during the cold season. Therefore, favor establishments that offer to sprinkle generously with water the frame and wheel wells.
The right size
Large wheels allow a vehicle to sit better on the ground. This gives a feeling of stability and robustness. In this context, it is not surprising to note that the latest models from the manufacturers generally wear larger and larger sizes (19, 20, 21, or even 22 inches). Should we therefore, when winter arrives, opt for a narrower tire with a smaller diameter? According to Steve Bourassa, director of products at Nokian, “the best recommendation is to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations by adopting a diameter approved by it to preserve the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle”.
