Bell Media has started to streamline the teams at V Télé, the generalist TV channel it bought over a year ago.
According to our sources, Groupe V Media has eliminated nine positions in sales and programmatic advertising at the direct request of Bell. They all lost their jobs on Monday.
“We confirm that some positions have been abolished [lundi] within the Bell Media sales team. These changes reflect the challenges facing Bell Media and the entire media industry, ”said at Newspaper Jean-François Parent, spokesperson for Bell Media.
The telecommunications giant took over the general-interest channel in July 2019. The sale was authorized last May by the CRTC.
Financial precariousness
In its decision, the federal body underlined the financial precariousness of V.
“Due to several factors, including the erosion of advertising revenues outside the Montreal market, the sustainability [de] V is threatened and [sa] survival in some regions is uncertain ”, could one read in the document of fifty pages.
The CRTC then estimated that Bell “should be able to improve the financial situation” of V.
Quebecor immediately called on Justin Trudeau and his government to reverse the CRTC’s decision and cancel the sale of V to Bell. This approach did not work.
The company cited “Bell’s monopoly power over Canadian media.”
“We reiterate the risks entailed by the acquisition of the V stations by Bell, such as […] the harmful consequences that the transaction would have on the acquisition of content and on advertising sales, ”Quebecor said through a spokesperson.
