Valérie Lavoie senses an increase in sales in her bookstore. An increase that could be linked to new government directives, but also due to the Christmas period.
“The start of the school year and the weeks that follow, until Christmas, are a big time for us. We feel that people seem to want to go ahead and avoid the holiday rush, ”said the owner of the Librairie du Portage in Rivière-du-Loup.
Valérie Lavoie was well established in Quebec and was making a living in sales and marketing before buying, five years ago, the Librairie du Portage and returning to live in her native region.
“It was my midlife crisis. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I was looking for a business in Quebec, but it didn’t work. I was wondering if I would not go back to Rivière-du-Loup. I learned that this bookstore was for sale and I felt challenged. The planets have aligned, ”she said in an interview.
Negotiations began and six months later she moved. And this woman, who has always loved books and reading, became the owner of this bookstore located in the Rivière-du-Loup shopping center.
Valérie Lavoie has noticed that customers consume in a different way since the bookstore reopened at the beginning of the summer.
“The bills are higher and there is less reading in the bookstore. People know what they want, they buy it and they leave, ”she noted.
On the alert
Children’s literature, literature and novelties are working very well at the moment.
“It elbows in the novelties”, imaged the bookseller-owner.
Valérie Lavoie admits to watching closely what is happening at the moment. She and her team are on high alert every day. The owner is unable to say if the fact of having gone through an initial period of closure brings a feeling of security for the future and its uncertainties.
“I don’t know if that makes it secure or if it makes it insecure. Will this time of year when we make our biggest income be affected? Are we going to stay open? I don’t know if it’s better to know or not to know, ”she dropped.
