Football tournament in May: a response shortly from U Sports

Glen Constantin will know shortly if his plan to hold a football tournament at Laval University in May bringing together six of the best programs in the country will get the green light from U Sports.

U Sports must grant a waiver for the project to materialize because games or practices are not usually allowed to be held during this time of year.

Constantin wants on the one hand to bring together in Quebec the teams that have faced the Rouge et Or in the Vanier Cup final over the years in addition to the Carabins of the University of Montreal to spice up the event and on the other hand to allow revive university football which has been on hiatus since November 2019 and allow fans to find their way back to PEPS.

The McMaster Marauders, Western Mustangs, Saskatchewan Huskies and Calgary Dinos have confirmed their interest through their athletic directors. Carabins head coach Marco Iadeluca informed us of his interest a few weeks ago. All that was missing was the green light from his boss. As for the Saint Mary’s Huskies, who crossed swords with the Rouge et Or at the Vanier Cup in 1999 and 2003, they were not invited as the program has been hiccuping for the past ten years.

Red and Gold request

The U Sports technical committee, made up of two people, received the Rouge et Or request. It made its recommendations to the executive committee, which should decide next week. The executive committee is made up of five members, but the president, vice-president and treasurer of the executive council are the only ones entitled to vote. U Sports permanent staff, interim general manager Dick White and sports chief Lisette Johnson Stapley complete the executives, but they do not have the right to vote.

“The processes have been followed and I imagine the decision will be made next week,” said Johnson Stapley. The technical committee made its recommendations, but I cannot disclose them. In this period of pandemic, we must think of the athletes. This is our priority. In normal times I can see that some might oppose the project because it offers an opportunity to some teams and not to others, but we are not in normal times. You have to think about the physical and mental health of student-athletes and provide them with opportunities. As for the East-West Challenge, which takes place on roughly the same dates, I haven’t heard anything indicating whether the event will take place or not. ”

Special request

The East-West Challenge is an all-star game that mainly brings together the best third-year prospects in the university network.

Constantine had reached out to a few of his counterparts to host a similar event at the same time to allow all teams to play, but U Sports say they haven’t heard anything about it.

Constantin had sent a letter to U Sports on July 29 to put the organization in the scent of his project. According to the protocols, it was the director of the Sports Activities Department Julie Dionne who was to contact U Sports. In the wake of her trainer’s plan and in line with her initiative, Dionne sent a second letter to U Sports, which explains why the process has dragged on.
