The Reds eliminated without scoring

No points in two games: after losing 1-0 in 13 innings the day before, the Cincinnati Reds were shut out 5-0 by the Braves on Thursday in Atlanta, thus suffering a troublesome elimination.

The days of the “Big Red Machine”, the nickname given to the Reds in the 1970s, are well over. Although it was an unusual 2-for-3 duel, the Reds became the first non-scoring team in a series in major league baseball history.

On the other hand, the Reds’ offensive breakdown shouldn’t overshadow the excellent work of the Braves pitchers either.

In Game 2 of the series on Thursday, young starter Ian Anderson, 22, had a formidable outing, allowing just two hits and as many walks in six innings of work. He also struck out nine batters. Relievers Will Smith, Chris Martin and Mark Melancon were then perfect for one set each.

The course of the match was certainly something to rejoice the manager of the Braves, Brian Snitker, but also the Quebecer Alex Anthopoulos who, let us remember, is the general manager of the team.

Tours for Ozuna and Duvall

Used for a second consecutive day, the Reds reliever Raisel Iglesias for his part allowed four points, including three earned, at the end of the eighth inning on Thursday. Marcell Ozuna and Adam Duvall each hit a two-run homerun to propel the Braves.

In the first game on Wednesday, the Reds had a total of 11 hits, but they lacked opportunism on several occasions. The Cincinnati team then seemed incapable of causing anything, if only by placing the ball in play.

Against the Marlins or the Cubs?

In the next round, the Braves will face the series winners between the Miami Marlins and the Chicago Cubs. The second game of this confrontation was postponed from Thursday to Friday due to the weather conditions in Chicago.

Japan’s Yu Darvish was expected to be the starter for the Cubs, who face elimination following a 5-1 Marlins victory in the opening match. Rookie Sixto Sanchez was the designated pitcher for Miami.

Following this postponement, a third final game between the Marlins and the Cubs, if necessary, will take place on Saturday, still at Wrigley Field.

The Padres level the series

In San Diego, the Padres put on a good show and most importantly tied their first-round streak to a game anywhere, winning 11-9 over the St. Louis Cardinals.

True to his habit, Fernando Tatis Jr. was as spectacular as he was splitting, going there with two home runs, one of which was punctuated by a small “bat flip”. The Dominican hit his long balls in the sixth and seventh inning, producing five runs.

He has been imitated by Manny Machado and Wil Myers, twice. The latter allowed his team to register four points in this meeting.

Faced with the good end of the home team’s game, the Cardinals tried to stay in the game with the sticks of Paul Goldschmidt and Kolten Wong. The first stretched his arms at the start of the ninth inning and the second scored four runs, but it was not enough.

The “Cards” used eight pitchers while the Padres took nine from the dugout. Emilio Pagan (1-0) was credited with the victory and Trevor Rosenthal with a first save. Daniel Ponce de Leon (0-1) for his part added a defeat to his record.
