The Projet Montréal party sued for small claims

A man who claims to have negotiated the abandonment of a candidate for mayor so that he gives his support to Valérie Plante is suing the party of the mayoress of Montreal in order to obtain a consultant remuneration.

In his lawsuit filed in Small Claims Court in early 2019, Georges Amsellem asks for $ 15,000 [somme maximale pouvant être réclamée devant ce tribunal] at Projet Montréal and one of its collaborators, Jimmy Zoubris.

Mr. Amsellem claims to have agreed with Mr. Zoubris that a fee of $ 20,000 would be paid to him if he managed to rally Coalition Montreal mayoral candidate Jean Fortier to the party’s cause for the November 5, 2017 poll. On October 17, 2017, he announced that Mr. Fortier was suspending his campaign and giving his support to Ms. Plante.

The complaint maintains that Mr. Amsellem approached the current mayor of the Borough of Outremont, Philipe Tomlinson, at the request of candidate Jean Fortier in order to see the interest of Projet Montréal.

Mr Tomlinson then allegedly asked Mr Amsellem to contact Ms Plante’s adviser, Jimmy Zoubris. The latter allegedly told Mr. Amsellem that the agreement on his fees as a consultant could not be written on paper “because it was illegal”, according to a lawyer letter in the court file.

To flesh out his complaint, Mr. Amsellem submitted in evidence a thank-you email from the mayor of Outremont, now mayor.

“I am writing to thank you for having been the instigator with me and Projet Montreal for the opening of negotiations between Projet Montreal and Jean Fortier. I am happy to know that following our discussion an agreement was negotiated between the two parties thanks to your intervention ”, we can read in the message from Mr. Tomlinson sent on October 29, 2017.

In their dispute, Projet Montréal and Mr. Zoubris say that the thank you email sent by the mayor of Outremont was made out of politeness and in the hope that Mr. Amsellem is satisfied with his so-called “accomplishment” and that he may stop getting involved persistently.

They indicate that they have never needed or used the services of Mr. Amselllem, and they evoke the fact that Jean Fortier cut ties with him two days after joining Projet Montréal.

“I disagree with the approach you tell me you want to take. I ask you not to contact me anymore, ”Mr. Fortier wrote in an email on file.

No hearing date has been set.
