Unlike in previous years, the Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t immediately among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup, but that doesn’t stop their forward Evgeni Malkin from believing it.
The Russian is aiming for his fourth career Stanley Cup in 2020-2021 and no player from his country has won so much. Publicly admitting his motivation to establish this feat of arms, number 71 however knows that time is running out and that we must win now. At 34, he knows the best of his professional career is behind him. The same goes for his sidekicks Sidney Crosby and Kristopher Letang, both 33 years old.
“We talked about it a lot together. We’re still hungry, we want another cut for sure, Malkin told media, according to comments reported by the daily. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. We get older from year to year and we don’t know how many seasons we have left to play together. We are excited to be together again this time. I hope that we will excel and that the rest of the team will follow us. ”
An example to follow
Malkin’s ever-present desire to win comes as no surprise to his head coach Mike Sullivan, who believes the veteran capable of doing well thanks to an impeccable work ethic.
“He has a certain point of view about his game and his career. I think he sets big goals for himself, as he has to because he’s quite an elite player, he explained. “Geno” is a guy who cares about the Penguins and their success. What I admire the most about him is that he takes responsibility when things don’t go in the right direction for us or for him. He is the first to stand up and make himself accountable. ”
Now, we will have to see if these fine words will turn into big nights for the Penguins, surprised by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2020 qualifying round. The task does not look easy in the Eastern section either. For Malkin, it’s all about showing others the way.
“I feel good, everyone is together. It’s a great chance for the whole team to follow us and for me to be a leader in this group, he said. The first match [mercredi contre les Flyers de Philadelphie] will be very important. We need a little confidence. By winning a few matches, I think we’ll be driving. Personally, I have a lot of experience and I’ve been in this league for a long time. My body is ready. ”
“He’s built his legend here, he’s an exceptional talent who has been one of the best in his age group over the past decade and he’s still hungry. That’s what I see. Not just him, but the whole group. He and Sid, Letang want more, ”said Sullivan.
