A Montreal drug addict who stabbed a stranger in the heart in order to steal him was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday with no possibility of release for 14 years.
“It was intentional, cruel, violent and devious. To steal a few dollars, it shows a flagrant lack of consideration for human life, ”insisted Judge Alexandre Boucher.
This is how the magistrate described the heinous crime committed by Danny Brochu more than two years ago. The drama unfolded just a few blocks from the place where the 42-year-old was sentenced on Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse.
On the morning of September 13, 2018, Brochu and another man, Sébastien Carrara, followed the victim around Square Viger. At around 7 a.m., Carrara lured Boris Gagnon into an alley without a camera in order to extract money from him.
The drug addict duo had targeted the 46-year-old stranger because of his puny nature.
Their plan went wrong and the victim was stabbed once in the heart.
According to the evidence presented at the Brochu trial, before the holidays, it was this one who dealt Mr. Gagnon the fatal blow.
He was also arrested in possession of the bloodied knife the next day while he was sleeping in a park.
A jury found Brochu guilty of premeditated murder on Monday, but still argued Wednesday that he did not kill the victim.
“I admit having been there, but not having stabbed him,” Brochu maintained, answering M’s questions.e Alexis Dinelle, who represents the Crown with Me Nadia Bérubé.
His accomplice incriminates him
Carrara, for her part, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter five months after the murder. He then testified against his accomplice.
“Mr. Carrara is a liar like a tooth puller. He quickly took an eight-year sentence to get away with it, but maybe he took part more than he said, ”the defense pleaded.
Me Élise Pinsonnault suggested that the judge impose a minimum of 12 years in prison on his client, arguing that he “should have the chance to try to rehabilitate himself”.
In the eyes of the Crown, the killer was to spend at least 16 years in jail.
Brochu has accumulated more than a hundred convictions since 1997 and dragged a problem of crack consumption which culminated in the gratuitous death of an innocent man, pleaded Mr.e Dinelle.
Judge Boucher cut the pear in half.
