Faced with the increase in COVID-19 among homeless people, the main organizations working with them are demanding that they be vaccinated as a priority against this coronavirus, just like employees.

According to organizations helping the homeless in Montreal, COVID-19 is spreading like wildfire among their clients and the workers who offer them services.

The Old Brewery Mission, Bon Accueil Mission, Maison du Père and Accueil Bonneau said on Tuesday that 96 homeless people have tested positive since the holiday season, unlike just 21 cases in the previous ten months. from March to December.

Therefore, they ask that the employees who work in this field as well as the homeless be vaccinated as a priority against this coronavirus.

“To reduce the risk of a serious outbreak among frontline workers and homeless people in Montreal, these target groups must be immunized against COVID-19 now,” said François Boissy, president and CEO of the Father’s House.

These organizations will argue that by being in the lead for vaccination, they will be able to better meet the needs of the homeless in these times of crisis.

“The supply of places available in accommodation and in hot spots does not meet the demand linked to the pandemic,” said James Hughes, President and CEO of the Old Brewery Mission. Once all the staff in the community are vaccinated, the resources for our clients can quickly increase their capacity to accommodate people experiencing homelessness who need a safe place to spend the night. ”

These four resources argue that COVID-19 is spreading rapidly in their environment because their clients often find themselves close together, despite instructions for physical distancing. These people who live on the streets are also more vulnerable because they often suffer from other health problems. They are also more reluctant to seek care before they become seriously ill.
