The Minister of Foreign Affairs, François-Philippe Champagne, and the Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, will inherit new responsibilities in favor of a small cabinet reshuffle which will be announced on Tuesday.
According to our sources, the member for Saint-Maurice – Champlain will be called upon to replace the current Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Navdeep Bains. The latter had already indicated that he would not stand for re-election in the next election and would have decided to leave the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau immediately.
In doing so, Marc Garneau will be propelled to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, our sources added on condition of anonymity.
Toronto MP, Omar Alghabra, will inherit the post of Minister of Transportation as a result. The latter is currently Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.
This small cabinet shuffle will come hours before the start of a retreat from the Liberal ministers’ caucus. Discussions, in virtual mode, between the ministers are to begin on Tuesday and continue on January 14, 18 and 21.
The caucus should take advantage of this virtual retreat to discuss vaccination and post-pandemic economic recovery.
