The Centrale des unions du Québec (CSQ), the Confederation of National Trade Unions (CSN) and the Federation of Workers of Quebec (FTQ), after a meeting with the office of the Minister of Education, call on the Legault government to “Proof of common sense”, in front of the probable scenario of prolongation of the holiday break.
The unions consider that if Quebec’s goal is to limit the spread of the virus, closing schools halfway would be “a serious mistake”.
Because, for these union organizations, maintaining school daycare services would be “unacceptable”, since in this case the measures aimed at reducing social contact would be undermined.
“We urge the government not to put our heads in the sand: closing schools while keeping childcare services open would be as effective as a homeopathic product,” said Sonia Ethier, president of the CSQ, in a press release. Thursday.
The central unions deplore the government’s insensitivity to the daily reality experienced by the staff of school daycare services, who inherited an additional workload after the introduction of three pedagogical days.
“Child care services are not places of quarantine. There is nothing coherent about the scenarios envisaged by the government, ”denounced Jacques Létourneau, president of the CSN.
“The decision to extend the holiday break while maintaining daycare services would be irresponsible and inconsistent,” said Denis Bolduc, secretary general of the FTQ.
