Ontario wants to improve animal welfare

Animal friends, rejoice! The Ontario government has formed an advisory group with the goal of “improving animal welfare” across the province.

The committee consists of experts, including veterinarians, farmers and animal rights advocates, who will inform the development of regulations made under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, 2019.

Severe penalties

This law provides “the toughest penalties in Canada” for people who neglect or mistreat animals. Ontario would be the first province in the country to create a fully provincially managed law enforcement system.

“We have positioned Ontario as the national leader in animal welfare and are committed to building on the progress we have already made in this area,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.
