Mazda3 2021: are we waiting for the turbo or not?

I really want to buy myself the new turbo Mazda3, but it is not cheap. Does the normal all-wheel drive model do the job, or is it worth buying the turbo version?

Hello Louis,

Indeed, the long-awaited Mazda3 turbo moves a lot of air with its 2.5-liter engine, which develops up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium gasoline. What’s more, the turbo version comes with all-wheel drive, to give you a ride in full control.

That said, it’s quite expensive, as the turbo engine is only available on the most-equipped package, at over $ 35,000, while naturally aspirated AWD models are available from a just under $ 29,000.

Now the question comes back to whether you need all that extra power. You see, an all-wheel drive Mazda3 with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder develops 186 horsepower, and 186 pound-feet of torque. It is quite a decent engine, which allows the car to go 0-100 km / h in just under 8 seconds.

Now the turbo version comes with 40% more power, and everyday you will see a big difference. The turbo model accelerates faster, both in town and on the highway. When it comes to fuel consumption, it’s surprising, but there isn’t a very big difference. You might do 1 L / 100km more, but consider that to have all the power of the engine, you have to put on premium gasoline.

In the end, if you can afford it, go with the turbo version. It will give you more pleasure and performance, for a more exclusive experience. Having said that, the atmospheric Mazda3 is also an excellent car, with quite decent performance for a large majority of motorists.
