Hyundai Kona or Nissan Kicks: which one to choose?

Hyundai Kona or Nissan Kicks: which one to choose?

My girlfriend wants to change vehicles in the next few weeks. It hesitates between the Hyundai Kona Preferred and the Nissan Kicks SR, rather similar in terms of price, but with more interesting equipment on the Kicks side. On the other hand, the warranty offered by the Kona is better. For now, my girlfriend is leaning more towards the Kicks.

I have all the Car guide since 1986, this year 2021 will be my 35th. I was on your site to see if there was a comparison match between these two vehicles, but saw that the Kicks had changed categories. Why is it rendered in city crossovers rather than subcompact SUVs?

Hello Yan,

First of all, a big thank you for your loyalty! We hope you enjoy reading the 2021 Car Guide as much as we enjoyed writing it.

We have effectively decided to separate small utilities into two different categories. In the case of the Nissan Kicks, it is now part of the urban crossover, because it is its primary vocation and it cannot receive all-wheel drive.

At Hyundai, its direct rival is therefore the Hyundai Venue, smaller than the Kona and which cannot receive a four-wheel drive. The Kona, a subcompact SUV, is a bit larger and also offers two different engines.

Between the two models you are coveting, there is a difference of $ 20 per month for 84 months funding at the time of this writing. But in the case of the Hyundai Kona, it has all-wheel drive, which the Kicks doesn’t.

I don’t know if this is one of the important things for your partner, but it can make a big difference in everyday life in winter. Hyundai’s longer warranty is also a strong point, as you rightly pointed out.

In contrast, high-speed rolling noises are annoying aboard the Kona, and cargo capacity is smaller than that of the Kicks. The trunk volume of the Nissan amounts to 716 liters, against only 544 liters on the Hyundai side.

The comfort of the Kicks surprises, thanks to a well-tuned suspension and welcoming seats for an entry-level vehicle. Fuel consumption remains attractive, and the equipment is complete for the price paid. On the other hand, performance is down compared to that of the Kona, which offers slightly better acceleration and pick-up.

Either way, these are vehicles that will do a good job. The easiest way would be for your partner to try both models to see which one she prefers to drive. It sometimes happens that we favor a model on paper, and that once behind the wheel, the driving position, the shape of the seat or certain controls are not suitable for our use.
